Recovered!
Update on the earring: we found it! There was so much hair and other gunk down in the pipes that it pretty much would have been impossible for the earring to get through all of it, but it took a while for us to dig through it and finally hear the plunk of the earring falling into the bucket. Anyway I was excited.

They say it is healthy to do at least one good deed a day. Glad I could count this as one of mine for today.
And she wasn't kidding about the gunk we pulled out of that pipe.
